AMERICA STREETS

A Multicultural Anthology of Stories

After reading a few of the short stories in this Anthology... I have picked a few favorites out.  My favorite one so far is:  Thank You M'am by Langston Hughes.  This story is so much fun.  It is about a young boy who tries to snatch a woman's purse so he can buy a pair of blue suede shoes.  The woman Luella ends up taking him home, and cooking him dinner and giving him money for the shoes.  The story ends with the boy leaving her home... leaving it open for the reader to think about whether or not he really got the shoes.

Another Story is "Business at Eleven".   It is about a brilliant youngster who buys magazines from a lady and sells them for a profit.  He is running his own business at the young age of eleven.  Suddenly he stopped going to buy magazines, and when he did return--he had news that he was moving away to LA.  Again the story left the reader to wonder what happened to the boy after he moved away.

One more really good story in "America Streets" is   "The Wrong Lunch Line".  It is about two girls who are best friends and one of them pretends to be a Jew so they can have lunch together just one time at school.  They got in trouble, but their friendship stayed the same after school.  It reminded me of my friends in middle school.  Awesome story.
