Children's Books

1.Title:  Good night, Baby Bear

Author: Frank Asch

Genre: Picture book

 

Summary:  A mother bear faces the challenge of finding a snack, a drink and even the moon to her baby bear before he can fall asleep.  This book is a very cute story for younger children.

 

2. Title:  Dear John

Author: Nicholas Sparks

Genre: Realistic Fiction

 

This is a romance novel about a young man (John) who proves that when you love someone, their happiness is more important than anything, even one’s own self.

 

3. Title:  Five Days in Paris

Author:  Danielle Steele

Genre: Realistic Fiction

 

This is also a romance novel about the realistic truth about love and business and politics.  Very enjoyable.

 

4. Title: The Busy Day

Author: Sarah Gillespie

Genre: Picture book

 

A cute board picture book about a young dragon who has a very busy day doing things many young children do.

 

5. Title: Out to Play

Author:  Sarah Gillespie

Genre:  Picture Book

 

A very nice picture book about young dragons that love to play  the same games and activities as young children.

 

6. Title:  Time for Bed

Author:  Sarah Gillespie

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is also a fun picture book about Dragons and Bedtime.  It helps with bedtime for young children.

 

7. Title:  The Tea Party

Author:  Sarah Gillespie

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is a helpful book for young children, also about dragons and tea parties.  Ideal for kindergarten age children.

 

8. Title:  One Hen

Author: Katie Smith Milway

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is a story about a young boy who borrows money from his mom and bought a hen. He sold eggs to buy more hens to sell more eggs.  Eventually he was able to pay his mom back and gain enough money to go to school.  Very interesting book for older children.  Very impressive illustrations as well.

 

9. Title: Goodnight, Sweet Pig

Author:  Linda Bailey

Genre: Picture Book

 

This book is great.  It is a counting book about a pig who just wants to go to sleep, but more and more pigs continue to interrupt her by making noises and dancing etc..   She nicely asks them to lave and eventually she gets to sleep.  Great for bed time.

 

10. Title:  Whales on Stilts

Author: M.T. Anderson

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a hilarious children’s novel for older children about three children making an attempt to stop a mad scientist from taking over the world.  I enjoyed listening to this audio book. 

 

11. Title:  Nuts to You!

Author:  Lois Ehlert

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a fun short book for younger children about a squirrel and sharing her nuts. 

 

12.   Title: My Mama Says There Aren’t Any Zombies, Ghosts, Vampires, Creatures, Demons, Monsters, Fiends, Goblins or Things

Genre: Picture Book

 

Author:  Judith Viorst

 

This is a great story about a child who discovers “Things.”  He is curious but believes they do not exist because of what his mom told him.  This story is very creative.

 

13.   Title: Where does the Garbage Go?

Author:  Paul Showers

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is more of an informational children’s book depicting in children’s terms where garbage goes.  In my opinion it is a nice book, but not attention grabbing.

 

14.   Title:  Goodnight, Me

Author:  Andrew Daddo

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is a picture book for young readers about an orangutan who says goodnight to all his body parts before trying to sleep.  It is attention keeping and entertaining.

 

15.   Title:  A Gift to Share:  The Story of Moritz

 

Author:  Barry J. Schieber

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is an appealing story that depicts the loving relationship between a person and a wonderful dog.  Its talks about how helpful a dog can be to a lonely or sick person.

 

16.   Title: Hurty Feelings

 

Author:  Helen Lester

Genre: Picture Book

 

This story is sweet.  It is about a hippo named Fragility.  She is very easily hurt and extremely sensitive.  By the end she learns how to accept a complement. 

 

17.   Title:  Sebastian’s Roller Skates

 

Author:  Joan De Deu Prats

Genre: PIcture Book

 

This is a great story for shy children.   It is about an extremely shy boy who finds roller skates.  While wearing them, the boy became more and more outgoing.  Eventually he was comfortable and no longer shy.

 

18.   Title:  Zoopa:  An Animal Alphabet

Genre: Picture book/ informational

 

Author:  Gianna Marino

 

This educational book is a great learning book.  It is about a bowl of soup and it goes through the entire alphabet using creative words.

 

19.   Title:  Excuse Me!

 

Author:  Karen Katz

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a great book for younger children about manners.  Very enjoyable. 

 

20.   Title: The Going-To-Bed Book

 

Author:  Sandra Boynton

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a cute and silly story about going to bed.  It is geared toward younger readers.

 

21.   Title:  A to Z

 

Author Sandra Boynton

Genre:  Picture Book/ Informational

This is also an educational alphabet board book for young readers.  It pictures animals.

 

22.   Title:  Moo, Baa, La La La

 

Author:  Sandra Boynton

Genre: Picture Book

This is also a great children’s book by Sandra Boynton.  It is a fun story about farm animals and the silly songs they sing.  My 4 year old daughter loved it.

 

23.   Title:  Opposites

 

Author:  Sandra Boynton

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is a great educational children’s picture book about opposites.  An elephant (large) is friends with a rabbit (very small).  A very nice short story for young readers.

 

24.  Title:  But not the Hippopotamus

 

Author:  Sandra Boynton

Genre: Picture Book

This is a funny story about the game hide and seek.   The hippo has a very hard time playing because he cannot hide because he is too large.  Very fun story.

 

25.   Title:  The Grouchy Ladybug

 

Author:  Eric Carle

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is a great story about a lady bug that does not want to share food with the friendly ladybug so he wants to pick fights all day long but never actually wants to fight.  In the end he fights a whale and is very humbled.  In the end he goes back to the friendly lady bug where they share their food. 

 

26.   Title:  Pumpkin Critter

 

Author: Mister Tom

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a fantastic Halloween book about a pumpkin who will stop at nothing to scare a little boy.  In the end the boy greatly scares the pumpkin.  The idea of the story is that bullies are cowards too.  My daughter absolutely loves this story.

 

27.   Title:  Seven Things that Steal your Joy

 

Author:  Joyce Meyer

Genre:  Informational for Young Adults

 

This is a great realistic book about the seven life activities that drain a person from joy.  It teaches how to regain your joy and keep it regardless of the seven things.  It really helps me in continual happiness and keeping a positive outlook.

 

28.   Title: Purpose Driven Life

 

Author: Rick Warren

Genre: Informational for young Adults

 

This is a Christian Devotional consisting of 40 ideas.  It is a book that helps a person find the meaning of life through God. 

 

29.   Title:  Peter Cottontail’s Easter Egg Hunt

 

Author:  Joseph R Ritchie

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is an awesome flip the flap educational book that encourages counting, and learning through fun interesting ways.  GREAT for kindergarten and first grade.

 

30.   Title:  Thank You Bear

Author:  Greg Foley

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is a very cute book about a little bear who finds a tiny box.  Everyone he shows it too seems completely unimpressed.  He begins to think it is not that great until a mouse comes and absolutely loves it and thanks him.  The moral of the story is that not everyone likes something that may be special to you. 

 

31.   Title:  The Lady and the Spider

Author:  Faith McNulty

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a nice story about a gardener who finds a spider in her garden and decides to be nice and let the spider live.  The story is about the value of life and a great story for all ages.

 

32.   Title:  Horton Hears a Who

Author:  Dr. Seuss

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is of course a Dr. Seuss book about an elephant who believes that a person is a person regardless of size, and also in keeping his word.  It is a very cute book for younger children.

 

33.   Title:  How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Author:  Dr. Seuss

Genre: Picture Book

 

This book is a classic by Dr. Seuss.  I enjoyed reading the book version.  Very cute and sweet.

 

34.   Title:  Gilgamesh the King

Author:  Ludmila Zeeman

Genre: Folktale 

This is a short retelling of the first portion of the myth of Gilgamesh.  It is the first of three books.

 

35.   Title:  Miss Suzy’s Easter Surprise

Author:  Miriam Young

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is such a great story.  It tells of a mommy squirrel who adopts 4 baby squirrels.  I definitely suggest this book.

 

36.   Title:  The little Engine that Could

Author:  Watty Piper

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This story is a classic.  Very cute story about a little train that faces a huge hurdle in trying to get over a mountain.  He ends up successful.  Great book for encouragement. 

 

37.   Title:  The Wind is not a River

Author:  Arnold A. Griese

 Genre:  Realistic Fiction

 

This is a longer Fiction book about two siblings who manage to live alone on an island after the Japanese invasion.  Very heart-touching story.

 

38.   Title:  The Empty Chair

Author:  Bess Kaplan

Genre:  Realistic Fiction

 

This is a beautifully written sad story about  a young Jewish girl whose mother has died.  He must then deal with adjusting to a new mom.  She faces obstacles that deal mainly with her emotion and feelings. 

 

39.   Title:  Noah and the Great Flood

Author:  Warwick Hutton

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is simply a retelling of the classic bible story of Noah’s Ark. 

 

40.   Title:  The Angry Moon

Author:  William Sleator

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a great fantasy story of a Tlingit Indian.  It is a great story that includes bravery and Magic.

 

41.   Title:  Tuesday

Author:  David Wiesner

Genre:  Fantasy

 

This is such a cute fantasy story about frogs.  They float in the air and discover and explore neighborhoods while the people sleep.  It is a great story for young readers.

 

42.   Title:  The Color Wizard

Author:  Fantasy/ Poetry

 

This is a great story about a Gray Wizard.  It is actually a rhyming poem.   It is also very colorful.  It tells about a wizard who changes his gray world by adding color. 

 

43.   Title:  The Dragonling

Author:  Jackie F. Koller

Genre:  Fantasy

 

This story is very cute.  It is about a baby dragon who mistakenly got left alive.  His name is Darek.  He faces obstacles in successfully getting back to the Valley of the Dragons. 

 

44.   Title:  Kinship with All Life

Author:  Allen J Boone

Genre: Fantasy/SciFi

 

This is a great story for older readers.  It tells of how animals of all kinds can communicate with creatures (including humans) of all kinds.  It is somewhat philosophical.

 

45.   Title:  The Diary of a Young Girl

Author:  Anne Frank

Genre: Biography/Autobiography

 

I wanted to add this book simply because it is the story of a young girl whose family hid from the Nazi’s during WWII.  I actually did not read it this semester, but it is a great historical piece. 

 

46.   Title:  Helping Out

Author:  George Ancona

Genre: Picture Book

 

This is a great picture book showing many photos of children being helpful.  I think this book is great because it encourages children to help in various activities.

 

47.   Title:  Mom Can’t  See Me

Author:  Sally Hobart Alexander

Genre:  Realistic Fiction

 

This story is quite touching.  It is about living life to the fullest through a huge obstacle:  Blindness.

 

48.   Title: Charlotte’s Web

Author:  E.B.  White

Genre: Fantasy

 

This is also a book I read in a past semester that I wanted to add to my book list.  It is about the classic story about the spider (Charlotte) who makes brilliant webs in Wilbur’s (a pig) pen.  Brilliantly written.

 

49.   Title:  The Rough-Face Girl

Author Rafe Martin

Genre:  Fantasy/Picture Book

 

This is somewhat of a Cinderella story about an Indian girl who has no outer beauty, but amazing inner beauty.  Of course the story has a happy ending.  A great story.

 

50.   Title:  Jack and the Beanstalk

Author:  Steven Kellogg

Genre:  Picture book/ Fantasy

 

This is just the story of the Classic magic bean and the rapidly growing beanstalk.  This is an awesome classic story.  My daughter makes me read it to her all the time.

 

51.   Title:  Wolstencroft The Bear

Author:  Michael S. Weber

Genre:  Picture Book

 

This is a cute little story about a bear who sat on the shelf at a drug store for so long.  He saw many other animals come and go.  Finally someone loved him and his name.  Of course again the book had a happy ending.

 

 

 

52 Title: The Emperor Penguin's New Cloths

Author: Retold & Illustrated by Janet Perlman

Genre: Picture Book

Summary:  The emperor penguin always wore new cloths (every hour of every day). One day 2 scoundrels said they had cloth to make cloths but if you were dishonest or simpleminded you would not be able to see the cloths.  The emperor paid a lot of money to to scoundrels to make him some cloths made of this magic fabric.  When the cloths were "finished"  the emperor pretended he could see him so others would not think he was dishonest or simpleminded.  Everyone pretened to see the cloths for the same reason.  A small penguin child admitted he could not see the cloths and many others began to admit.  Soon the emperor realized he indeed did not have any cloths.  He was tricked by the scoundrels.  The scoundrels were never seen again. 

 

The moral of the story is to always tell the truth, even if it makes you look bad.

53. Title: The Little Ant

Author:  Michael Rose Ramirez

Genre: Picture Book

Summary:  A little ant broke his leg in a snow storm and asked the judge to punish the snow for breaking his leg.  The snow blamed it on the sun, who blamed it on the clouds, who blamed it on the wind, who blamed it on the wall, who blamed it on the mouse, who blamed it on the cat, who blamed it on the yarn, who blamed it on the scissors, who blamed it on the blacksmith... The blacksmith pleaded that God makes everything and we have to make the best of it.  The ant went home, propped his leg up and just enjoyed the beautiful snow flakes. 

Moral of the story is to be thankful not blameful.

54.  Title:  Victoria's Adventure

Author:  Susan Jeschke

Genre:  Picture Book

Victoria was a little girl who was very sick and had a dream about her toys.  They took her to the land of bears.  It was very cold and she froze into ice.  So the toys took her to the sun, where she melted completely.  Then a medicine man planted her in the ground where she came back to life.  Her toys then took her home and crashed into the window to get into her room.  She woke from her nap at this time and fell out of her bed.  She realized she felt better. 

The moral of the story is that when you are sick, you need your rest, and sometimes reality can enter your dreams.

55. Title: Max and Ruby's Midas

Author: Rosemary Wells

Genre: Picture Book

Ruby was a rabbit and Max was her little brother.  She read a book to Max about using laser eyes to turn healthy snacks into unhealthy snacks like cake and cookies.  The character accidently used his laser eyes and turned his family into snacks.  All he wanted was to get his family back.  When he decided to eat the healthy food, his family was reestablished.

The moral of the story is that we need to eat healthy and not try to sabotage things.

56. Title:  Poetry for Young People

Author:  Robert Frost

Genre: Poetry

This is a book of seasonal poems.  There are many fun poems about Winter, Autumn, Summer and Spring.  It is refreshing.

57. Title:  Don't Read this Book, Whatever you do. More poems about School

Author: Kalli Dakos

Genre: Poetry

This is another fun book of poems about school.  Some of them are very funny.

58. Title:  Mrs. Cole on an Onion Roll, and other School Poems

Author: Kalli Dakos

Genre:  Poetry

This is a funny book of poems.  It is also very refreshing to read after reading serious stories.  Great for Read Alouds.

59. Title:  In the Swim (Poems and Paintings)

Author: Douglas Florran

Genre:  Poetry

This is a small book full of lovely poems.  I would love to use this book as part of a classroom library.

60. Title:  Love Letters

Author:  Arnold Adoff

Genre:  Poetry

This is a book full of great poetry, suitable for older children or young adults.

61. Title:  If Pigs Could Fly , and other Great Thoughts

Author:  Bruce Lansky

Genre:  Poetry

This is a great book of funny poems.  Great for any day.

62. Title:  Tickle Day:  Poems from Father Goose

Author: Charles Ghisna

Genre: Poetry

These are more great poems for chldren.  This is another book I would love to have in my classroom library.

63. Title:  Things Fall Apart

Author:  Chinua Achebe

Genre:  Historical Fiction

This is a book about the life of an Indian man and his family.  It touches on the rituals and beliefs practiced in their tribe.  Some of them outlandish.  Eventually, things fell apart.  Very interesting novel for young adults or high school age.

64. Title:  Animal Farm

Author:  George Orwell

Genre:  Historical Fiction

This is a book for young adults about a farm that was taken over by the animals on the farm.  It has historical truth about the ruler Napolean and his people.  It is a political Satire.  Very interesting story line.

65. Title: The Scarlet Letter

Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne

Genre:  Historical Fiction

This story depicts what life may have been like for adulterers long ago.  Hester Prynne had to wear the letter A on her chest to signify her as an adultress.  It has a twisted storyline and a great ending.  More for young adult readers than children.  Great for high school level readers.

66. Title:  The Truth about Bats

Author:  Joanna Cole

Genre:  nonfiction/informational

This is a great children's chapter book about bats.  It is very informational and educational.  It even tells how to make a bat cage.  Very neat book.

67.Title:  I Wonder why Encyclopedia

Author:  Many Authors:  Published by Kingfisher

Genre: nonfiction/informational

This is a children's encyclopedia.  All the wording is focused for children.  Awesome Informational book.

68. Title: Everything from A to Z about Cats

Author:  Candace Henderson

Genre:  Nonfiction/ Informational

This is actually a book in progress.  Candace is working on getting it published.  It has valuable information for children about how to befriend their pets; in particular cats. 

69. 70. 71. Title:  His Dark Materials:  A trilogy based on three books  The Goldern Compass, The Subtle Knife, and the Amber Spyglass

Author: Philip Pullman

Genre:  SciFi/Fantasy

This trilogy is great but can and has caused religious controversy.  It has a good story line.  The movie The Golden Compass definately has been toned down to release on television but the books let it all out.  More about this trilogy on my author biography page.  There are also links on there to access information about the author and these books.l

72.  Title:  Christina Aguilera:  The Unauthorized Audio Biography

Author:  Chris Herring and Susan Van Dusen

Genre:  Biography/AutoBiography

This is a biography about the life of Christina,  Ideal for high school age.

 

73. Title: Jennifer Lopez: Maximum Audio Biography (Maximum)

Author: Dan Winter and Louise Weekley

Genre:  Biography/Autobiography

This is a biography about J-Lo.  Also very interesting book ideal for high school age.

 

74. Title:  Fat Cat

Author: Margaret Macdonald

Genre:  Folktale

This is a great Danish Folktale.  Very interesting.

 

75.  Title: The Fire Children

Author:  Eric Maddern

Genre:  Folktale

This is a folk tale about the Western Africa.  I personally did not find this book interesting, but I believe it can be fun and informational.

76. Title:  Tales from Old Ireland

Author: Malachy Doyle

Genre:  Folktale

This is  a book of tales of ireland.   Some of the tales are very much fun.  Great for read aloud.

77. Title:  Sisters

Author:  Danielle Steele

Genre:  Realistic Fiction

Great realistic story about a tragedy and the bond between 4 sisters.  It would be a good book for young adult readers.

 

78. Title: The Penderwicks

Author: Jeamme Birdsall

Genre:  Folktale  From the Land of Enchantment Book Awards

This was a cute tale about a widowed man and his 4 girls who befriend a boy.  Very cute story.  I would recommend this as a read aloud at any level.

78. Title:  The Boy on Fairfield Street

Author:  Katherine Kull

Genre:  LOE book Autobiography/biography

This is the story of the life of Dr. Seuss.  I absolutely loved it.  It had a lot of insight on the real Dr. Seuss.

79.  Title:  Becoming Naomi Leon

Author:Pat Munoz

Genre:  LOE

This is a story of a girl who runs away with her gradmother from her mom in search of her father.  A beautiful story.

80. Title:  My Snowball

Author:  Grace Coleman

Genre:  Poetry

This is an unpublished poem about a little girl and her friend who happend to be a snowball.  Eventually the snowball ran away but not before wetting the bed.
