MIDTERM REFLECTION

March 17, 2008

Confidence & Independence
Well, At first, this was a hard one for me to grasp.  Since this is my first semester at UNM I feel there is a lot for me to learn.  I have found that learning is based on what I will push my self to do.  I have become more confident as the semester continues, but I am by nature a very shy person.  I think I have come a long way with both independence and confidence.  However, I feel I still have a way to to, but I am becoming more confident of acheiving my goal this semester.
Knowledge Content
My knowledge content is definately increasing as the semester continues.  However, I dont feel i am at a high level right now.  When the semester began,  I didn't even know what genre was.  Now I feel pretty confident picking genres out.  I am excited to learn about literary elements and literary circles.  Also I feel I am gaining understanding about how to successfully work with shy or over-outgoing students.  I feel I understand most of the topics covered so far.  The next step for me is to better understand them in depth and focus on pushing myself to learn learn learn.

Skills & Strategies
I feel I have gained critical skills this semester about how to work as a team with Sarah in successfully making Woodsong a pleasant experience for the children.  We are gaining understanding of how to put together the short lessons to get the most out of our teaching time.  I think I am learning again to strategically work with children and literary circles.

Use of prior & emerging experience
I dont have a lot of prior experience working with children at the grade level we are working with this semester.  However I do have experience working with much younger children in a classroom type setting.  I feel like this has helped me dramatically in understanding where children are coming from and being able to communicate effectively with them.

Reflectiveness

This semester has definately been a learning experience for me.  Before I thought education was just about learning the core aspects of subjects.  During this semester I have learned that education is also about teaching and learning social controls.  I am learned so much so far, even though we were off to a slow start.  I am confident there is so much more for me to learn out there, and I am excited to find out what it is.  I am very excited to know there are so many different aspects of teaching and learning.  This semester has been great.

I think I would give myself a B, because I have four classes, 2 children and a full time job, so I honestly have not given this class my all.  However I have given a great deal of effort.  I am doing what is needed to successfully learn about children's literature and pass this class.
